Bruniture e usure ai margini della sovraccoperta, discreti interventi a matita; buona copia -- The Odyssey has always ranked, as a whole, among the greatest masterpieces of the storyteller's art: but here and there the quality seems to sink far below the average high level, and some of the lapses are of such a kind that the prevalent opinion today is that the poem consists of several parts, independently composed and later mechanically joined together. In the present volume, which represents the text of the Flexner Lectures delivered at Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania, in 1954, and addressed primarily to a non-specialist audience, the author examines the structure of the poem and defines and discusses the principal obstacles to the belief that the O dyssey was composed in its present form by a single poet.
