St. Bridget of Sweden (d.1373) was very much concerned about the decay and corruption of the Church. She had many revelations in which Christ and St. Mary appeared condemning abuses and bad practices. These revelations were written down and some of them were sent to the popes in an attempt to goad them into carrying out reforms. After St. Bridget's death, some of the revelations to and concerning popes were published by her Spanish confessor, Alfonso, former Bishop of Jaén, in a collection that is normally entitled the Tractatus de summis pontificibus. The present book gives an edition of the original Alfonsine collection and makes a reappraisal of the following, much discussed questions: what was the title and content of the original collection? when was it compiled and for what purpose? why was it omitted in the early editions? to what extent did Alfonso revise St. Bridget's revelations?
