Esemplare in ottime condizioni; monografia autorevole e non comune -- This book is the first detailed assessment of Sebastiano del Piombo to have appeared in English and is the first monograph in any language for over thirty years. Sebastiano's career was one of the strangest of any High Renaissance artist; a member of Giorgione's circle in Venice, his move to Rome in 1511 brought him the experience of an entirely different artistic tradition, the close friend ship of Michelangelo, and a role as Raphael's chief competitor in the city. The author, who has written a number of specialized articles on the painter, follows his career through all its stages and provides a detailed study of the works and a re-examination of the artist's own letters. His Venetian beginnings are discussed at length. A separate chapter is devoted to each of the three major products of the collaboration with Michelangelo, and the book provides a new evaluation of Sebastiano as a portrait painter and an appreciation of his neglected late paintings. One of the appendices explains how a confusion about the respective drawing styles of Michelangelo and Sebastiano arose in the past. The book is richly illustrated with many hitherto unpublished details of the major paintings.
