A catalogue of Rembrandtʼs etchings, chronologically arranged and completely illustrated
Hind, Arthur Mayger
Descrizione Ristampa / Reprint, 1967 [Methuen, 1923, 2nd edition] - Volume in copertina rigida con sovraccoperta, 148 pagine di testo cui seguono numerose tavole in nero fuori testo. L'opera originale era suddivisa in due volumi, qui ristampati in un unico tomo. Discrete mende ai margini del dorso della sovraccoperta, peraltro copia in ottimo stato -- Rembrandt Harmenz van Rijn is universally acknowledged as one of the supreme masters of etching. He devoted as much, if not more, of his energies to etching as to painting, and in his hands this craft matured as an art, assuming the technical and dramatic qualities formerly confined to painting and sculpture. His virtuosity touched upon all subjects, from landscapes to nudes, and the body of etched work he left be-hind is incomparable. This catalogue by Arthur M. Hind, late Keeper of Prints at the British Museum and Professor of Art at Oxford University, is a definitive examination and analysis of Rembrandt's work in this medium. Long out of print, this scarce two-volume set, here reprinted as one volume, is one of the few complete catalogues of Rembrandt's etchings; it remains the most essential. Incorporating illustrations of the complete set of etchings in the British Museum - one of the major collections of Rembrandt's work extant, containing 335 impressions from 307 subjects - it forms a thorough chronological study of the artist's development in this medium. Hind's catalogue opens with an authoritative introduction to Rembrandt's work in this medium and to the craft of etching and drypoint in general; much of this discussion is devoted to a provocative investigation of the authenticity of many etchings previously attributed to Rembrandt but now of doubtful origin. This is followed by Hind's exhaustive catalogue, a complete state-by-state examination and detailed description of each plate. In addition, Hind also provides an extensive bibliography listing exhibitions, collections, books, articles, and other catalogues devoted to Rembrandt's etched work.
