Esemplare in ottime condizioni -- Giorgio Ghisi (1520-1582), the preeminent Italian engraver of the generation following Marcantonio Raimondi, produced sixty-five prints during a working life of some forty-five years, as well as damascened work of the highest rank. The engravings are primarily reproductive, many after works by Primaticcio and Giulio Romano, and some after works by such widely known artists as Raphael and Michelangelo, Salviati, Bronzino, and Correggio. Ghisi's most fascinating and enigmatic engravings, however, are after two artists whose work is less well known - Giovanni Battista Bertani and Luca Penni - and the catalogue thus brings to the fore these highly rewarding and undeservedly obscure figures. This book, the first illustrated catalogue raisonné of Ghisi's engravings, presents them in chronological order - in large part determined by the authors, as only about one third of his prints are dated - thus demonstrating the development of an engraver's style; it describes their states in detail; and it discusses the source and iconography of each image and the relation of the print to the original work. Every print is illustrated in its published state; in addition, many proof states and much related material are illustrated. Because the prints are considered from every aspect, including the circumstances of their publication, information has been deduced about the works they reproduce, and new suggestions are here made about works by Francesco Salviati, Lambert Lombard, and Giorgio Ghisi's brother Teodoro. The introduction gives Ghisi's biography and considers his oeuvre as a whole. Although Ghisi was born and died in Mantua, the small northern Italian city ruled by the noble Gonzaga family, he spent nearly half his working life in the north of Europe. From 1550 to 1555 he created engravings for Hieronymus Cock, whose Aux Quatre Vents publishing house in the flourishing port city of Antwerp was the largest and best known in northern Europe. Evidence assembled here for the first time shows that Ghisi then spent ten or twelve years in France, during which time he produced some of his most compelling images. Giorgio Ghisi's prints have always been well known wherever prints have been collected, and perhaps especially so in the English-speaking countries. Indeed, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has acquired nearly one hundred impressions of Ghisi's engravings, including a unique proof state of The Calumny of Apelles and rare early states of the Prophets and Sibyls series after Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling. The catalogue also includes an illustrated appendix of watermarks, biographies of all the publishers of Ghisi's works through their final states, summaries of the artist's letters now known, a bibliography, and an index.
