Descrizione Volume in copertina rigida con sovraccoperta, 176 pagine con alcune riproduzioni a colori e oltre 80 figure in nero su tavole fuori testo. Bruniture alla sovraccoperta, peraltro volume in ottimo stato -- Appreciation of the artistic qualities of Russian and Greek ikons is a fairly recent phenomenon in the west. Moreover, such appreciation is still often misdirected. For many people, the yard, stick of aesthetic merit has been that of the Italian primitives. One of John Stuart's aims in his perceptive and penetrating book has been to reveal the originality and distinctiveness of the Byzantine tradition. A member of the Orthodox Church himself, he has provided us with a comprehensive general introduction to ikons treated within the context of a Byzantine philo, sophical view of the world. He shows a constant awareness of the fact that form, content, style and the Orthodox conception of reality are closely inter/related. The author's assessment of the stylistic features of the various genres from the late Roman period to the present - among them the Linear, Paleologue and Suzdal' traditions, the Novgorod, Pskov, North Russian, Cretan and Stroganov schools, and the later more natura' listic styles - gives special emphasis to ikons that are important from the point of view of the collector. The historical background is skilfully painted in. An extremely full bibliography and an appendix containing an important document about the painting of ikons by P. A. Florensky put the finishing touches to a book that will be treasured by lovers of Russian, Byzantine, and Greek Orthodox art.
