Strauss, Walter Leopold
This is the first comprehensive pictorial reference and catalogue raisonné of all the surviving chiaroscuro woodcuts of the German and Netherlandish masters. Chiaroscuro prints, the unique color woodcuts printed from two or more blocks, were a revolutionary development, differing remarkably from ordinary black and white prints of the time. The tonal effects and bold highlights they introduced to prints inspired many of the great artists of the 16th and 17th centuries to explore the possibilities of this technique. Among them were Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, and Hans Baldung, Grien in Germany, followed by Frans Floris van Vriendt, Hendrick Goltzius, and Abraham Bloemaert in the Netherlands. In some instances the black and white woodcuts of these artists were even converted into chiaroscuros posthumously. Author Walter Strauss has provided a valuable tool for both the private and professional collector of prints. In most print collections chiaroscuro impressions are presently not catalogued separately; it is one of the aims of his book to facilitate this process. The various states of each print are described in detail or illustrated for reference, and a great many chiaroscuros are here described or illustrated for the first time. The listed repositories will make it possible to locate many impressions hitherto difficult to find. The print lover will also find that the careful two-color printing process evokes the tonal effects (though not necessarily the original hues) of these rare and fascinating works.
