Esemplare in ottime condizioni -- From the Middle Ages until recent times the provision of clothing was an essential part of many charities. The clothing often took the shape of a uniform, which might advertise by special symbols the pious generosity of those who gave. The book, in describing the evolution of these costumes, shows how they tended to represent the fossilization of ancient fashions, so that they also emphasised the humble status of the wearers. It also demonstrates how, paradoxically, certain charitable institutions became so prestigious that costumes such as the Blue Coat uniform and the poor scholar's gown came to be admired and coveted. A detailed history is given of clothing supplied in a wide variety of named institutions, including orphanages, schools, almshouses and homes for military and naval pensioners. Chapters are devoted to sociological aspects such as need, economy, hygiene and, above all, the various attitudes towards the costume that were held by donors, recipients and observers at large. Finally, there are accounts of how recipients were often paraded on ceremonial occasions for the edification or delight of the general public. The sources of evidence include surviving garments, contemporary books, prints, drawings, engravings, paintings, funerary brasses, and archive material in the custody of individual foundations and record offices. The many illustrations come from the same sources and include, in the case of schools, the statuettes of costumed children which are still preserved throughout the country.
